But why is it any of her business! I hear from the seat in front of me.

And you don’t go around talking like that to people you don’t know. He doesn’t answer, or at least I don’t hear him. The thing is, the missionary says, locals here claim that not only do you have to stop in front of Maruchito: you have to stop and leave something for him. Something like a flower, a candle, a handkerchief, anything, but something. Ah, so you have to leave something for him, as well. I sink into my seat, close my eyes again, and the eyes of the doll in that cart appear in front of me. Those glassy eyes, staring out at the desert. I can’t think of Maruchito in the guise of a suffering peon; I see him precisely as that doll that now, in the darkness, must have a half smile on his lips, thinking about what is happening to me because I didn’t leave something for him. A kind of Chucky, the evil doll. Standing in his carriage, seemingly inanimate but in reality on high alert, waiting for the moment when one human will pay for all the scum of the species he or she belongs to. Or, I also see him, throughout this long night stranded out on the road, like a saint with backbone, one who’s not willing to turn the other cheek. No new testament or new reconciliation or new politically correct practices: let’s get back to that eye for an eye, which we never should have given up in the first place.
